How to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking on Google

If you’ve been a webmaster for a while you’d noticed that there are several search engines on the internet but the major one is Google. Obviously, as of the time of writing this post Google own about 70% of the search engine market. Hence I won’t be wrong if this discussion on SEO is focused on Google.
I hope to make a series of post on SEO starting from today which if applied accordingly will certainly yield a significant result on your website ranking.Because I intend to share some of the exact principles I’ve applied to rank some of my sites like GSM Shortcode Provider on the first page of Google in the past two (2) years for any keyword or phrase related to my niche.
What is SEO?
SEO is about Optimizing Your Website so that it ranks higher in Google’s search engine results. SEO can be considered easy and at the same time complex because there are a lot of factors involved and the trend is very dynamic.
I will be considering three factors that will enable your website rank higher when it comes to SEO and they include;
  • Keyword research
  • On-page optimization
  • Off-page optimization
Keywords are the foundation of SEO. Keywords drive SEO because people search Google by keywords and Google connect websites to web searchers via keywords. So it becomes mandatory to identify the best keywords related to your niche that people are searching before you create a blog post, before you create a product page or before you design your website.
Rule: keyword first before content creation.
There is a special tool to help you with keyword research. This tool was developed for Google ad-word and paid search. It’s Google keyword planner. You need a Gmail account to make use of it. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to make use of the keyword planner.
Note: It is used to be important that you write your exact content with the keyword incorporated exact match, but not anymore as Google uses Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI).
With this type of indexing, the contents of a web page are crawled by the search engine and the most common words or phrases are combined and identified as the keywords of that page. LSI looks for synonyms that are related to your targeted keywords.
Google loves relativity rather than keyword over-match.
This is something very bad most people do in the name of optimizing their website.
Meta Tags
Title: Shortcode
Description: Shortcode
Keyword: Shortcode
Google will slap you the face when you do what’s above.
This is what you should do instead. Be super relative with no chance of over seo assuming you want to rank for the keyword ‘shortcode’.
Title: Shortcode Provider In Nigeria
Description: We are the fastest VAS provider to set up a shortcode for you with reasonable pay out
Keyword: Content marketing, shortcode with good pay out, gsm shortcode provider etc.
So here is a formula to rank your web page
– Get 10 relative words to your target keyword from the Google keyword planner
– Create a 500 word article
– Make sure you stuff the article with these relative words
This way you are sure of a great result.
Two things you have to bear in mind when doing your keyword research is ‘Optimization’ and ‘Authority’.
  • Optimization – Is making sure that google understands what keywords you are targeting, what products and services you selling and where you sell them
  • Authority – Authority is making sure that Google knows you have the best content for their users
When doing SEO focus on optimizing your individual web pages and not the website.
Next is On-page optimization,
The first part of on-page optimization is URL optimization. I will share some best SEO practices on this.
Use readable url’s only
Avoid links like: http://www.yourdomain.com/p=123
Search engines cant understand what your page is about if you use such links
  • Go to your word-press admin dashboard,
  • Click on ‘Settings’
  • Tick on ‘Post name’ on the options
Have keyword rich url’s
Url like: http://www.yourdomain.com/target-keyword
Keep url’s short
Avoid http://www.yourdomain.com/target-keyword-is-the-greatest-thing-ever-you-need-do-in-seo
You can edit the url path from the permalink right on the WordPress editor.
Always use hyphens in your urls and not underscore
Avoid links like: http://www.yourdomain.com/target_keyword
Use links like instead: http://www.yourdomain.com/target-keyword
You can edit the permalink right on the WordPress editor.
Another important factor to be considered is ‘Relevancy’
There are two types of relevancy for local ranking which are considered important in SEO.
They are;
  • Location
  • Niche
You need to make Google understand that your website is located in Nigeria and not some other country.
You need to make Google know that your website is for a particular niche and not something else by using the keyword tips I discussed earlier in this article.
So how do you get location relevancy?
You can achieve that in different ways but I will show you a simple strategy today using an application called Picasa.
Picasa is an image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, plus an integrated photo-sharing website, originally created by a company named Lifescape but now owned by Google.
Here is how to use Picasa to get location relevancy
  • Go to google and download the Picasa application into your computer.
  • Open the picasa app
  • Open the folder containing the images you want to use for your website design
  • Click on each file and rename them with related keywords of your niche instead of using img123456.jpg
After naming the images with relevant keywords to your niche the next thing is location.
  • Click on the map icon and put the address of your business
  • Open a Google my business account. Click here for a post to guide you on this aspect.
  • Add the keyword and location based optimized images to the page
Let go practical
  • Save all the images you want to use to design your website in a particular folder
  • Open the Picasa app
Picasa automatically load all the various images folder in your computer into the application. So you are to click on the exact folder where you have the images you want to optimize.
That is the app above and you noticed the folder ‘MY PICS (5)‘ is highlighted because I’ve clicked on it. That is what I want to use for illustration hence it will open the images inside the folder at the middle of the app interface.
Click on the first image, like you can see from the image above that is the first pic has a blue frame around it meaning it’s highlighted.
Go to the top left corner of the app interface and click on ‘File’ and it will bring a drop down menu. Then click on ‘Rename…
Type in the relative keyword you want replace with the existing file name of the image. After which click on the ‘Rename’ button…
Don’t underestimate this action as images play a vital role in page optimization
Repeat the exact process of renaming all the images to the most relative keywords of your niche.
With the image still highlighted, go to the footer of the app interface and click on the map sign and it will display the map interface at the right hand side of the app.
Type the address of your business in the search bar and click on the search icon provided in the map interface.
The highlighted image will appear on the region of the map you address is located. Confirm it’s accurate by clicking on the ‘Ok’ button…
You will see the map sign stamped on the image then you have successfully optimized the image for location relevancy. Such that whenever a ‘phrase + location‘ is searched on Google you will website will be submitted on the search result because of the image geo data.
Create a Google my business account and upload the images into the page and also use the images for the development of your website.
It’s been a great article thus far. I will stop here for today and in the next post of the SEO series you will learn about off-page Optimization. You can’t afford to miss the lessons on the next post because off-page optimization is one very sensitive aspect of SEO that can enable your website rank high in as fast as 24 hours. You will learn incredible stuffs about backlinks. Yup!
SEO is simply making websites go up in Google. It’s is controlled by some factors of which some have been discussed in this article. I believe the knowledge shared here backed with adequate action will yield a big success for you in your SEO journey. SEO tricks are very dynamic so always look out for new tips that are result oriented as Google make regular changes to their algorithm.
